The largest temple in Lombok, located in Cakranegara, Mataram. The philosophy is the epitome symbol of Mount Meru Mahameru, iatana the Gods. According Lontar Andha Bhuana, Meru symbolizes the source of all that exists on earth with the elements Purusa (life force or inner) and Pradhana (material strength)
Built in 1720 by Anak Agung Made Karangasem, king ruling Pura divide into 3 main sections: Nista Mandala to worship Tri Murti, meaning Tri Murti alone represent three embodiments of God: Brahma <Vishnu, and Shiva.
Three are in the main Meru Utama Mandala which contained around 33 sanggah or small shrine was built as a symbol of the people of Bali who helped AA Made Karangasem in the construction of the temple. The highest temple has 11 overlap to Shiva, Meru 9 overlap to Vishnu and overlapping 7 to Brahma.
In the past Anak Agung Made Karangasem, he married the Datu Dinde Nawangsari, Sasak Muslim nobility. As a reward and respect for the beliefs, AL Ihsan Mosque was built not far from the area Pura Meru. Mosque is a symbol of inter-religious harmony in Lombok. The mosque is still used by Muslims in the region Cakranegara.
